August 31st, 2018 – Graduation Day, Part 2

From My Facebook Post:

Taylor Update: Graduation, Part 2

Taylor is enjoying his down time resting and preparing for his birthday weekend! Not to mention that tomorrow is Kick Off for Carolina Football! We are also cheering on the Gilbert Indians tonight!!!! We look forward to being able to attend a game before the season is over to see all of his Gilbert friends! #BeatLexington #GoGilbert

A lot of resting and joking around… trying to pass the time until we get some time to see our friends and family tomorrow and Sunday!!

I wanted to share some additional photos and videos from yesterday’s Graduation! Jennifer and I are still beaming with pride, so please indulge us 😉

Shortly after the little ceremony, T made a dash for the door in his wheelchair… after we went to the apartment for a little while, he walked out… yup, walked! He was walking because we were leaving campus for the first time on our own!!! Let me say it again… HE WALKED OUT!!!!! Such a good feeling for all of us!!! PENNY!

Taylor was getting hungry, so we stopped off for his first ‘out on our own’ meal… McDonald’s! He said, and I quote… “You just can’t beat McDonald’s fries.” I agree!

It was a lot of first for us, first time out without professionals… first time in the car… first time getting out of the car… first time in public spaces on our own. PENNY PENNY PENNY!!

All in all it went very well and he enjoyed our first outing!

The weekend will be over before we know it but we are going to take advantage of our little bit of freedom and celebrate his birthday visiting with friends and family!!

We will celebrate Labor Day quietly and rest up for his big first day of the outpatient program! 5.5 Hours of therapy!! He’s excited… so are we… but in the meantime, a little personal freedom is VERY exciting too 😊

Taylor would love to continue to get cards and hear from you all cheering him on, both online and in person! If you would like to send cards, please do! Even though we are moving to outpatient, the address is the same: Taylor Dorward c/o Chris Downs 2115 South Converse Drive Florence, SC 29505

I hope you have had a great start to your weekend! It’s never a bad time to find the good in something… find your pennies and celebrate them!!!

Until tomorrow… Miracles Happen!  WE LOVE YA’LL!!!

August 30th, 2018 – Graduation Day

From My Facebook Post:

Taylor Update: Graduation Day!

Taylor had a ‘pretty good’ night sleep… I asked him as he was trying to dry his hair after his morning shower… I could tell that he was a bit more chipper today then he has been… and I had a pretty good feeling I knew why too 😊

TAYLOR GRADUATED FROM INPATIENT THERAPY TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHOOO HOOOO!!!!!!

He is so proud of himself but made sure to spend a few minutes to thank each therapist, nurse, and doctor for what they have done to help him through his rehabilitation!

We will continue with outpatient services at the same facility, starting Tuesday!! He gets a good break for now, which is great! We get to celebrate his birthday & Gamecock Football!!!! He is looking forward to seeing all his friends and family who able to visit with him! Jennifer and I are excited too! ❤️

8 weeks… WOW. I don’t know what to say… if I let myself slip back to the beginning… deep sigh.

Please join us in celebrating the end of this chapter in Taylor’s Journey!!! CONGRATULATIONS SON! You deserve everything you have been given… every single penny! It may go without saying, but you have touched so many people’s lives before and after your injury. As you continue to grow after your injury, never lose your sense of ‘being’. Your presence is what you are all about… your kindness, love, compassion… you being you. It’s an honor to witness. It truly is.

PLEASE join us in celebrating the start of the NEXT chapter in Taylor’s Journey!! He graduated today, but it is not the end!! We are ready! We are counting on everyone to continue to share his journey with us and fight!! Fight for every penny… no matter where it is hidden… no matter what it takes!

Never give up… never give in…. instead, GIVE IT ALL YOU GOT!!!

Until tomorrow…Miracles Happen!  WE LOVE YA’LL!!!

August 29th, 2018 – Jogging

From My Facebook Post:

Taylor Update: Jogging

Taylor had good night’s rest again last night! Maybe not quite as good as other nights because he was a teeny bit cranky today, but then again, we all are now and then 😊

Today was a busy day! He is getting discharged from inpatient tomorrow and he will have ‘graduation’ from inpatient therapy before continuing outpatient therapy here next week! Graduation? Yes, YES!!! Such an incredible milestone for him to celebrate tomorrow! HIS LAST DAY IN A HOSPITAL!! WE CANNOT WAIT!!

With the plans for transitioning to outpatient came a LOT of testing – this will help measure his progress and set a new starting point for the outpatient team! It’s the same facility and the key difference will be that he gets to live with us in our short term apartment until outpatient is complete! PENNY!!!

He did ST, OT and PT testing… and ended the day with some treadmills (which he loves!). Today, he got up to a JOG!! Not sure if it was the first time but he looked great so I’m throwing a penny in the jar! 😊 PENNY!

He also enjoyed a nice visit from Jennifer‘s friend and colleague!!

Tomorrow will be a very VERY exciting day… graduation… no cap and gown or long speech.. (well, I might make one LOL) but T will be celebrating his graduation with his therapy team and fellow patients. I will be carrying tissues for all of us witnessing the little celebration… Taylor will be carrying his pride and a great big smile!

Outpatient therapy is even more scheduled therapy sessions – this is so exciting for all of us! I know he will excel and continue to grow! ❤️

While we are very excited about tomorrow, we will never forget how we got here, and how we got through this part of our lives and his rehabilitation. So many people, including all our friends, family and supporters… both in person and online!! ❤️

There is much more to come, but for now, we will take some time to celebrate T’s graduation! I will be sure to have pics tomorrow to share with everyone!!!

In true T fashion, his last walk to the cafeteria… was another first. He walked there… without a walker. PENNY!!!!!

We will continue to celebrate each and every tiny step forward! His graduation doesn’t mean we get off this long road, we just had a slight turn to the right… many more miles to go… that’s OK… I just hope the toll booth at the exit ramp takes pennies… because we will have a TON OF THEM!!

Until tomorrow… WE LOVE YA’LL!!!

August 28th, 2018 – What’s Next

From My Facebook Post:

Taylor Update: What’s Next

Taylor had an amazing day… it started with a great night sleep!

As we continue down this road of recovery, we are starting to do some family training – Planning and preparing for when we go home! Yes, there WILL be a day when we will take Taylor back home for good! As excited as we are, we are patient… we know that there is no time like the present for his recovery, and we want the absolute best for him… so for now, we work toward that common goal…balancing work, real life responsibilities, and some glimpses of normalcy – it’s easy to feel impatient… but we quickly replace that with appreciation.

Appreciation for all our family, friends, supporters and our employers…❤️

His vision continues to be at the top of our request for love, thoughts and prayers… it’s also at the top of our list for our therapy efforts, for sure! But we also know that everything else, literally… still needs a ton of focus and hard work. He has his entire life ahead of him and we want him to be the best he can be!

With family training came a trial run in the apartment, rather than in the hospital room. What does that mean? First night out of a hospital room… PENNY! First time in a real bed… PENNY! This step is so awesome to see and be a part of! It gives us all so much hope and excitement for the future! PENNY!!!!

T didn’t waste any time and quickly found himself getting comfortable in ways that he has not done in a long time… like getting comfy on the couch. The little things that we all sort of assume are normal, they are brand new to him and he LOVES IT!

If all goes well, and I feel certain that it will, at the end of this week, we will switch from inpatient care to outpatient care! What that basically means for us… T will still get rigorous therapy for 4+ hours a day, but.. BUT he will live with Jennifer and I in the apartment! WHAT A GREAT FEELING!!! We will still be here for several more weeks, it’s hard to say… our travels are far from over, there is still a lot of road to cover… but our tanks are full!

T is so blessed to receive so many cards, notes and gifts of encouragement! He recently received a care package from Cheerwine… and an impressive autographed football from some Atlanta Falcons alum. He’s received T-shirts from friends too! He loves them all!! Late yesterday he opened a package that contained a South Carolina Gamecocks football signed by Coach Muschamp! The timing of that is so awesome for T as he is just so amped about the kickoff this weekend! Thank you, on behalf of T, for ALL the kind words of encouragement, cards, notes and gifts… they mean so much to him and he will treasure them all, always!

T spent his day being challenged more and more by the therapy team. I think they enjoy challenging him as much as he enjoys being challenged!

Not only are we excited about him living with us in the apartment here, but he was finding pennies all over the place today! It seems like every time something is checked off the list, he’s just asking ‘What’s Next?’ – he never seems to care how much he has accomplished… just going through each thing, one at a time, ready for the next challenge.

Washed his feet on his own… PENNY! Put on his socks… PENNY! Put on his SHOES! PENNY!!

Walking on his own from his room to therapy gym… NO walker, just assistance for balance!! PENNY!

Taylor had a 1.5 hour session with the neuro psych team to measure his cognitive ability – he thought it was very boring LOL – but.. BUT… today we learned the results of the testing: His recovery started nearly 8 weeks ago when he was discovered under water, not breathing, no heartbeat… no breaths for about 15 minutes… sustained significant brain damage… today, when comparing his neuro tests to others his age and gender… with NO brain injury, T scored above average! The tears are rolling down my cheeks as I type this… Jennifer and I are so fortunate, so blessed… and so honored, for his recovery… and for the outstanding people who took action and saved his life… Thank you!

Above average… after all that has happened to him… how does ‘Thank you’ even come close to show how we feel for T’s friends, the EMT team and the Trauma team … it doesn’t, it just doesn’t.❤️

We will have a little longer of a break this weekend because Monday is a holiday… we are VERY excited to celebrate T’s 19th Birthday and the Gamecocks Football Teams first win of the year!! 😊

OH, I almost forgot… It was haircut day 😊

I hope you had a great day and took time to appreciate all the little things we have in our life that we tend to overlook… they make us ‘whole’… and each single penny matters!

Until tomorrow… WE LOVE YA’LL!!!

August 27th – Keep Climbing

From My Facebook Post:

Taylor Update: Keep Climbing

Good night’s sleep… CHECK! Ready for the busy week… CHECK!! Breaking records and dropping pennies like they are hot… CHECK CHECK!! 😊

T crushed it today… I mean, I am in awe every time I think about it!

Throughout the day he managed to make sure everyone he came in contact with knew how humble and kind he is… telling stories… accepting compliments but not bragging… encouraging others… thanking staff for their help… deep sigh… I am so taken back by him, even while carrying so many challenges on his shoulders… he just loves life and loves engaging with other people.

Today’s schedule was crazy busy! He only had a brief break for lunch, and even then he was on the clock… no dilly dallying LOL He enjoyed his Mac and Cheese… telling his lunch friends that his mom makes sure he always has mac and cheese… he’s right… she does, and it doesn’t go underappreciated Jennifer! 😊

PT – We walked around the hospital… not the hospital floor.. THE HOSPITAL! Outside.. no walker… assisted for balance, but it was awesome! Uphill… a lot! On gravel and loose stones… a lot! For about 45 minutes and he ended it with a one last climb… sweating… but VERY proud of himself when he did it! PENNY!

ST – breaking his tongue compression records… by A LOT!! His therapist had to raise the pressure and increase his time, just to keep him challenged. PENNY! When she complimented him, he just smiled and said “Thank you” – privately he bragged to me about it… he was very proud of himself, and he should be!!

OT – killing it on the hand bike, going over 1.5 miles while standing.. and oh yeah, conquering one more challenge that he has been struggling with for a few weeks… he was able to cross his legs! PENNY! This may not seem that important… but it’s one of those things we take for granted… especially when putting on socks 😉

Some more PT … yup, no problem! How about breaking his record on the treadmill… 88% of his own body weight.. and for 36 minutes!! He was tired at 31… but wanted to break the record… could have stopped at 35, but pressed on to 36… smiling the whole time because the therapist was so impressed… ‘Look at you!’ 😊 She said next time they will need to do uphill just to keep challenging him.. how did he respond? You might have guessed… ‘Cool’ 😊

By the end of the day he was ready for some food and some Momma time, I don’t blame him – he was a champion today! He wore his gamecocks shirt even though it was over 90 degrees outside… LOL This makes me chuckle… Liz said, why did you wear such a heavy shirt… he said it was my last Gamecock shirt clean. It really wasn’t, but that’s what he wore, and I don’t think he cared. He counts the days until kickoff… This weekend is his birthday weekend and he said he knows the team will win, because they always win on his birthday! LOL I don’t know how true this is but we will just go with it 😉 South Carolina Gamecocks

If anyone wants to send him birthday cards or a birthday message/note, please do! The address is Taylor Dorward c/o Chris Downs 2115 South Converse Drive Florence, SC 29505! He is turning 19!! WOW!

Such a long day, just when I think he’s done, he just keeps climbing. Not just uphill’s, but in his heart. T looked so happy today! It amazes me how many ‘stats’ he keeps up with – he knew he was breaking a record before they told them… each time.

He wants to get better… and he’s tracking it… which is AWESOME!!! I take away a good life lesson from that, and I will constantly keep challenging myself to keep climbing!

I hope you all had a great day and found all the motivation you need… or maybe just enough motivation… either way, keep pushing… and keep climbing!! One penny is all it takes to make today better than yesterday! It takes JUST ONE!

Until tomorrow… WE LOVE YA’LL!!!

August 26th, 2018 – How Are You Doing?

From My Facebook Post:

Taylor Update: How are you doing

Another good night’s sleep! T said today that it was his best yet – he’s said that before… so it’s great news that he feels that his sleep gets better and better! We are SO appreciative of this! He and Momma had some fun before he fell asleep… I’ll let the pics speak for themselves LOL

We planned on resting for the weekend… and today was filled with resting LOL

Throughout the day we went on a few walks and ‘rides’ for meal time or just out of boredom. He is getting very good at using the little light/darkness vision he has and combining it with sounds and memory… it’s pretty remarkable to watch!

Nearly everywhere we went, there was always someone stopping to say hello to Taylor. He’s a local celebrity 😊 In the hallways, elevators, cafeteria, or just random places throughout the hospital… someone is saying hello Taylor. Not just hello, but specifically his name. They are always happy to see him and asking “how are you?”

I usually stand there and just let him engage and today I realized just how engaged he gets… one family reminded him that they met yesterday (they knew he couldn’t see) and he quickly remembered their daughters name. They were all smiles when he remembered her name! He asked if she was there with them, and they said “no, she is back in the room”. He was quick to say “Tell her I said hello” – I watched them all smile with appreciation. He introduced me to them, and reminded them that I am not as good looking as he is, and that I will get there… with practice… maybe. 😊

Deep sigh… this kid… he is so selfless and caring… everyone he talks to feels his genuine compassion. As parents, Jennifer and I are so proud of this for all of our kids, but in this moment, today, T just reminds us over and over how much he cares for others. ❤️

This happened several times… a few people in the cafeteria… talking about his smile, about his personality… and he just goes on either thanking them or making them smile with a goofy comment or joke LOL

Nurses, therapists, even other patients… they just all love him, and it seems very obvious to me.

When all this first happened… it was his personality that I hurt for the most – his love, his kindness, his care… his humor, his selflessness…

I know he can’t see much… and I feel VERY optimistic about its continued improvement and his potential to regain his sight… but today I was reminded just how lucky we are to have all the wonderful things that make Taylor… Taylor.

It’s not money, or stuff… it’s things that you can’t see or touch… well, unless he’s giving you one of the best hugs in the world – that’s what he calls them… and he’s right. 😊

Please PLEASE keep sending love, thoughts and prayers for his continued rehabilitation and his vision! We NEED every one of them!!

Tomorrow is Monday, and he is SO ready for the full schedule that awaits him… no complaints, no gripes… in fact, he’s looking forward to it!

Until tomorrow… WE LOVE YA’LL!!!

August 25th, 2018 -The Great Outdoors

From My Facebook Post:

Taylor Update: The Great Outdoors

Taylor had another great night sleep!! Today was full of down time… TV, music, chatting, games… and maybe a little bit of a nap too 😊

Today he spent more time outside then he has any other day in over 7 weeks… PENNY!

He played bocce ball with some other patients – for not being able to see, he did pretty well with his accuracy, judging sound and distance… he was on the red team.. and the red team won! 😊 PENNY!

For lunch today, Jennifer and I took Taylor up the street to Jimmy Johns! We had a therapist join us (we can’t go on our own just yet) but it was a nice walk and it was great to be outside! We had to bring it back to the hospital to eat because the therapist had another appointment, but that is OK.. the subs were good and T enjoyed it!

Momma had some ‘her’ time today.. Very rare and much deserved!! So Taylor and I were on our own for a few hours… he cracked a few ‘don’t leave me alone with him’ jokes to the staff… LOL they get a kick out of his humor… so do we! We love him so much!!!

We had a good time roaming the hallways and having dinner. He did great navigating himself around in the chair.. using the light and shadows to tell where he was – we had a lot of fun… maybe too much fun LOL PENNY!

In the video… right at the end of him going through the halls… I stopped recording before he said “Not Bad” – he was pretty proud of himself! PENNY!

The weekend is already half in the books… tomorrow… more resting but maybe a trip to the gym!

Oh, he also enjoyed some Tim Tams – a treat sent by a good friend of mine from Australia! Thanks David!! T and Jennifer loved them! ❤️

We all hope you have had a great weekend so far!! Monday is right around the corner! We are all looking forward to the start of the new week!! I CAN’T WAIT!!!

Please continue to support Taylor with your thoughts love and prayers!! IT MEANS SO MUCH!!

Until tomorrow… WE LOVE YA’LL!!!

August 24th, 2018 – Spurs Up!

From My Facebook Post:

Taylor Dorward Update: Spurs Up!

Taylor had a great night’s rest!! I know this is being repetitive but we don’t want to ignore how important it is and how much we appreciate his good nights rest!!

T & I started the day by talking about South Carolina Gamecocks Football. Only a week until Carolina Kick Off! We all wore our gamecock shirts today and can’t wait to enjoy the football season! By the way – we all wish the Gilbert Indians good luck tonight!! #GOGILBERT

Late yesterday he and I were talking about all the Facebook comments and greeting cards he gets in the mail. He took a moment to explain why he likes them so much. Jennifer reads him many (maybe all LOL) of the Facebook comments and he loves that! It is a nighttime routine and it helps him fall asleep because he feels so encouraged and loved! He also really likes the cards because he can touch them.. and he likes hearing where (and who) they are all from. Thank you to everyone who takes the time to comment and send cards! They mean so much to us, but even more to Taylor! ❤️

Today, while in the hallway, he asked about recording a message specifically about the cards (he received 20 or so just this week!). We paused during a walk today so I could record his message…from his heart… I left the bloopers in, well, just because I knew he would get a chuckle out of it when he listens to the video! LOL

If you would like to send a card or note to Taylor, here is a link for the address:

Also, here is a link for #PenniesForTaylor bracelets/wristbands – they are a little fundraiser to help us out and show your support for Taylor at the same time! Be sure to include your address please 😊

https://www.facebook.com/PenniesForTaylor/posts/2057194437924100

We received a bunch more this week so if you haven’t received yours yet, they are on the way! Email PenniesForTaylor@outlook.com if you need help tracking down your wristbands.

Today was a great day full of fun/cool stuff that T loves doing – working out! He even went to the actual gym in the hospital and had some workout on the equipment! PENNY!

He rocked it on the treadmill too! Breaking his distance record!! PENNY!!!

We talked a lot about his vision today. Everyone, especially T, has that on their minds the most… including the therapy teams. We will continue to explore options while being patient and mindful of his other therapies, but … BUT… we did see some small improvements today again! He told us he was able to see his shoes… while standing up! That is pretty exciting for us to hear… it’s a little further away than usual so… He said he saw just the colors and blurry, but still, we will take every tiny little thing! PENNY!

It’s Friday, and the weekend is here! We will spend a lot of time resting, which is very important! I hope you have a great weekend! Find your pennies!! Rest! Prepare for next week and be safe! But most of all, be grateful for what you have, not what you don’t have!

Until tomorrow… WE LOVE YA’LL!!!

August 23rd, 2018 – Working Out

From My Facebook Post:

Taylor Update: Working Out

Another good night sleep… and no hallucinations for several days in a row! PENNY! We are VERY hopeful that that time is behind us, and I know Taylor is too! His brain just keeps healing more and more!!!

Taylor kicked butt today! He was bragging nonstop when I got to his room right before dinner. I love that he is so proud of himself!! He is quick to show off how strong and steady he is… and we love seeing it!

We continue to see small improvements in his vision – he feels unimpressed by them, but we are VERY excited about each little thing! When I say unimpressed, I don’t mean that he doesn’t care, I think they just happen to him so subtly that he doesn’t really recognize that they are improvements… well that’s what we are for, reminders! 😊 PENNY! My mom and Jennifer‘s mom have been awesome at recording videos for us and keeping us in the loop with each little victory! PENNY!

We get very excited about the vision changes and it’s so rewarding to have him ‘show off’ what he can do/see – still mostly colors but there are improvements in object recognition too! I held up a travel mug and he was quick to tell me that it looked like a glass (had some metal and was a ‘glass’ shape) and that was so impressive and awesome!! It was about 2 feet or so away, so shapes seem to slowly be forming for him and we pray and hope that that just keeps continuing!! For now, we will take that improvement and celebrate it! PENNY!!

His therapies are getting more and more fun for him! His balance is improving, his strength is improving, his control, the works!!! IT’S AWESOME!!

We may even be able to take him to the gym soon for him to do a full workout routine! That will be so cool! He is looking forward to doing that!!

Taylor made the most out of his day, I don’t know how he does it, but I am so glad that he does!

We all hope you had a great day too! Keep celebrating each little thing, they matter and they add up!! I never would have thought we would be where we are today… and it’s all because of those tiny things all along.. I promise, they matter, just give it time and keep celebrating them!!

Please, PLEASE keep fighting with us for Taylor – I know he is doing great, which we are so excited about… but we absolutely are nowhere near the end of his journey! We need you, your thoughts, your love, your prayers!!

Until tomorrow… WE LOVE YA’LL!!!

August 22nd, 2018 – 7 Weeks

From My Facebook Post:

Taylor Update: 7 Weeks

Another good night’s rest! We are getting spoiled… and Jennifer and I love it! 😊

It’s been 7 weeks since Taylor drowned. As I count the days and weeks, I am also counting the progress he makes. IT HAS ONLY BEEN 7 WEEKS!!! If you remember from earlier, a doctor told us they do not measure someone’s recovery until 6 months after the incident… we are not even 1/3 of the way there!! That makes me so excited about tomorrow and each day after!!! KEEP ROCKING IT TAYLOR!!!

Tons of fun stuff today!

Walking up steps… WHAT?!?! HOW COOL! PENNY!!!

Some puppy loving during Pet therapy! Taylor loves this and it makes us all so happy to see him happy! I wish we had Pet Therapy every day 😊

The team here is so incredible, I am impressed every day with the collaborative approach they take and how successful their plan has been for T. Their attitude and excitement toward his rehabilitation is incredibly helpful!

After 7 weeks, our determination has not wavered… our hope has not faltered… and T’s determination has been strong and steady! We are ready for the long road ahead, we hope you are too, we need you, not just today, or this week, but each step of the way!

Your comments, love, positive thoughts, prayers, encouragement… they go VERY far for us Dorward’s… and we can’t thank you enough! ❤️

Taylor’s peg site and trach site are both healing nicely and his comfort level just keeps rising!

I hope your week is going great and you are full of determination too!

Until tomorrow… WE LOVE YA’LL!!!
