August 21st, 2018 – Work Hard

From My Facebook Post:

Taylor Update: Work Hard

WOW, another great night’s rest!! So much to do today, so it’s a good thing!!! It was a full day and he busted his butt!! You got it Taylor!! Jennifer and I couldn’t be prouder of our 3 kids, we love you guys so much!!

T wanted to wear his University of South Carolina Gamecocks gear… can’t blame him, it’s almost football season and I know he is excited for it too!

So much happening today… yesterday was filled with awesome stuff but today was grit and hard work and he sure earned every penny!!

ST is doing great at helping him regain the muscle strength he needs to have proper enunciation and control. He is doing so great with this! I can’t wait until we have some down time to hear him sing!

During OT today, he had fun playing “beach” volleyball! LOL He had fun and a good little vision therapy as well 😊 PENNY!

PT was incredible today… some mild weight lifting to strengthen his shoulder muscles! They also started him on some independent movements… but the big news (and you can hear Liz’s excitement for him in the video) he was able to bend completely over and pickup keys from the ground… unassisted! PENNY!!!! That’s very hard, it takes balance and strength, and we are so proud of him for this one!!! That was a personal goal of his and he nailed it!!!

Treadmills… wow, check out the video, he’s doing great! A lot more of his own weight and he got up to 4.0 on the treadmill and hammered home a FULL MILE TODAY!!! GO TAYLOR!!! PENNY!!!

I have a pretty good feeling he will sleep well tonight, and probably fall asleep early 😊

Those pennies that may have seemed so small sure are packing a punch now that they are all working together! I LOVE IT!!!!

Work Hard, Pray Hard. That’s what’s on the Pennies For Taylor wristbands… and it couldn’t be more fitting! Please check out the PenniesforTaylor Page to learn more about how you can help us AND show your support for Taylor by getting a wristband!

What a great day! Thank you for everyone’s support and spreading the word of Taylor’s Journey! It’s so inspiring to me and I know to others! Please keep sharing your love, support and prayers for Taylor, his recovery and his vision! He is working hard each and every day, nothing is stopping him or getting in his way. ❤️

I don’t know about you, but I need to take lessons… he’s my hero right now, and I look at him and find it hard to ignore. I really need to work on some things personally and I have no excuses… he drowned 7 weeks ago, and LOOK AT HIM NOW!! If he can do this, I surely can buckle down and get things taken care of too! It’s time I work hard too.Until tomorrow… WE LOVE YA’LL!!!

August 20th, 2018 – No Strings

From My Facebook Post:

Taylor Update: No strings

Taylor said his sleep last night was the best yet! He’s so optimistic and I really feel like he’s trying to recognize each and every step in the right direction too! Sometimes his motivation stumbles a little… it’s not easy, but it is wonderful having so many people in our corner to help him through! Jennifer and I are so lucky to have such an amazing support team!

Today was a VERY special day 😊 and all of these cool things happening on a dear friend’s birthday! Miss Melissa, Taylor loves you and so do we! Happy Birthday!! We hope you had a great day!!! ❤️

Taylor’s therapy was a little light today… not for any negative reason, but for a good reason!

For 6.5 weeks he has had either a tube or a trach. Today, IT’S GONE!!! 😊 PENNY! PENNY! PENNY!!!

What an incredible milestone for him and all of us sharing our love, thoughts and prayers for him! THANK YOU ALL!

We are far from ‘done’ but wow, what a giant achievement for everyone who has helped him down this road… but especially for Taylor! I know he is VERY excited about this and so are we!!

No trach… also mean… NO Telemetry! That little ‘gameboy’ like device he’s been carrying around, stuck to his chest.. it was very important, but he no longer needs it either!!! PENNY! PENNY! PENNY!!

No trach, no telemetry… no strings to hold him down! So, today, he and his therapy team went for a walk out in town and went to get some lunch! LEFT THE HOSPITAL!!!! HE WALKED THERE!!! PENNY PENNY PENNY!!!!

What an incredible day for him, so many new things to celebrate!!

He played some games during therapy too, and he did great, but I can’t get past these exciting things!

Tomorrow will be AWESOME!!! I JUST KNOW IT!!! In the meantime, please join me in celebrating these awesome NEW things for him!!

The road is long, and we continue to need you, your thoughts, your love, your prayers… especially for his vision! Please keep them coming, but I think today deserves a little hooting and hollering, wouldn’t you agree?

The video of a few photos wouldn’t load so I am just attaching them here! I hope you like them!

Until tomorrow… WE LOVE YA’LL!!!

August 19th, 2018 – Quiet Day, Well Rested

From My Facebook Post:

Taylor Update: Quiet Day, Well Rested

Taylor had a good night’s sleep last night! He’s getting plenty of rest this weekend so he’s ready for his week of therapy!

It was a relatively quiet day and T kind of needed that. I am glad he had a slower day, so he could rest and get some quality ‘him’ time.

He spent a lot of time ‘watching’ TV – today was “How I met your mother” and well… more ‘Office’ LOL He loves that show!

For dinner, he got to spend some time out in the courtyard at the cafeteria – since this all started, he really hasn’t been outside much. I know he is looking to doing that more and more!

It’s becoming a bit of a habit of his to ‘explore’ after meals in his wheelchair. He rides around trying to use the overhead lights to ‘find’ his way through the tables/chairs in the cafeteria. He does quite well actually, and it’s fun for him too – a bit of a challenge. It impresses me that he keeps trying this… it seems like it could get frustrating, but he has such a good outlook on things, he even cracks a few jokes about things.

Today, while exploring the cafeteria… and remember, he doesn’t like to be given assistance/help in finding his way… He found himself in a corner. That’s probably where I would have been frustrated… nope, not him… he just chuckles… Oh! Is this a corner? And then says with a laugh… ‘Nobody puts baby in a corner!’ LOL This kid… ❤️

We are all looking forward to what this week will bring… Taylor’s determination will surely bring some more pennies for him and his rehabilitation! I CAN’T WAIT!!! Tomorrow will be AWESOME!!!

I hope your weekend was what you needed to rest for the busy week ahead. Mondays are our new favorite day of the week! After all, it IS the first day of the work week, so we have a clean slate… Let’s all give it all we got and make it the best possible!!

Please continue to fight with us!! Please send your love, thoughts and prayers for Taylor, his recovery and his vision! We need it now more than ever! Jennifer Dorward and I don’t want to be distracted by how far we have come… we still have a long road ahead and we are no where near done!!

Until tomorrow… WE LOVE YA’LL!!!

August 18th, 2018 – Bingo!

From My Facebook Post:

Taylor Update: Bingo!

Taylor had a good day today, I feel like he will sleep well 😊

Samm heads back to college tomorrow morning so today was their last full day together until Samm comes back to visit in a few weeks. They will miss each other but they made the most out of it, for sure! They went and had dinner together in the cafeteria… and Sammi didn’t mind dressing up for her brother. 😊

Some activities included goofing around (haha) and some calls from his friends back home. The call really made his day! The facility had a family event playing bingo! Taylor (and his ‘team’ LOL) did great… Momma and sissy helped with his board and he even won a few gift certificates! Jennifer Dorward

He had a little PT and Speech today – like weekends in the past, there isn’t much therapy on the weekends so he’s clear all the way until Monday!

The days feel full of fun and he stays pretty busy.. He loves the cards and the nice gifts of encouragement that everyone sends! Taylor even had a visitor come by and bring some gifts from the River Bluff and Body Shop baseball teams. They sent him signed poster and signed ball! That was so nice of them and it meant a lot to him to feel that support from back home, especially fellow baseball players!

The weekend is well underway and tomorrow will be a little different without Samm but T keeps reminding her that he will keep getting better and she just needs to work hard too.

Please keep sending your positive thoughts, prayers and love! WE NEED THEM!!!

We all hope you are having a great weekend and that you are getting in some down time. A good recharge is needed for us all, Monday will be here soon and we need to be ready to kick some butt!

Until tomorrow… WE LOVE YA’LL!!!

August 17th, 2018 – Whatever It Takes

From My Facebook Post:

Taylor Update: Whatever it takes

Taylor had a great nights sleep and that is always a big bonus for the day! He has so much more personality and not as many mood swings LOL

It’s Friday!! Normally on Fridays, his favorite therapist is not here but he was surprised today that she was… you know what that means… some good workouts! He worked very hard on leg lifts and the lokomat (robot).

I know the weekend is here but I feel like the week just started… it went by so fast!!

Taylor had an exciting discovery today… he could see his hand!! He was like… “Cool, I can see my hand… I haven’t see it in so long!” THIS IS AWESOME NEWS!!!

I held my hand about a foot or two away and he could tell how many fingers I was holding up!! PENNY!!!!!!!!!!

I am so excited about this… everyone is! Another baby step in the right direction… something new… something positive… and Taylor felt it… and man, did he need that!!! I am so grateful for his ‘discovery’ today! We have a long way to go but I am so hopeful and I really feel like his brain is healing more and more every day… I JUST KNOW IT!!!

He received a nice microphone from a friend and he started using it today… maybe we can get more out of him this weekend!

His voice/speech has come a long way as well as his physical abilities… please think of his vision and send lots of love, positive thoughts and prayers for him!!!

Thank you so much for keeping him close to your heart, it means the world to us… and all the love and support is not only helping us, but it’s helping him!!!

Have a safe and fun (Yes, you can have them both) weekend!!

Until tomorrow… WE LOVE YA’LL!!!

August 16th, 2018 – Whistle While You Work

From My Facebook Post:

Taylor Update: Whistle while you work

Taylor has been LOVING that the peg feeding tube is out! He just looks so much more comfortable overall, but especially when he’s in his bed! LOL

We had a visitor today… his name was Scotty. He’s about 45ish years old and told Taylor about his brain injury and what the Dr’s said he ‘wouldn’t be able to do’… Scotty drives and even runs 5k’s despite his prognosis. Scotty’s accident was 34 years ago.. and he’s doing great! A real inspiration to me, and I’m sure to Taylor as well!

I watched Taylor during the brief visit. Taylor was comfortable sharing how he received his brain injury. Both Scotty and his Mom were just blown away by Taylor and all that he can do!

It was an interesting exchange… even though it was short, it was like they had a bond. Scotty went around and shook all of our hands, and he reminded me of Taylor – with how respectful he was to us… how kind he was… and how encouraging he was.

I’m really glad they stopped by!

Therapy today was more detail focused, rather than strength focused… but still included vision exercises! I CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF THAT!! I am so glad that the therapy teams sees his slight improvements and are doing what they can to help encourage his brain to develop new pathways for his vision!! PENNY!!

During some down time in his room, T discovered he can whistle again! PENNY!!

His walking is improving so much, it amazes me to watch the recordings. Even though it seems like forever… it’s only been six weeks!!!

His Sissy heads back to college soon, so they are getting some extra time in together. T is so encouraging to Samantha.. reminding her how important college is and that he will keep getting better… and not to worry. ❤️

Joshua had an interview today – it’s a job he is really excited about!! I have been thinking of him a lot too today… he’s been so great taking care of things back home. I am just so proud of how both of our kids are helping and supporting Taylor’s Journey! Taylor even had a “brother to brother” good luck message for Josh today 🙂

It was a great day… but I just KNOW tomorrow will be even better!!

Scotty’s injury was over 3 decades ago… and he is still touching people with his story… Wow, I have a lot to learn…

Sometimes days feel rough.. but let us all remember that there are so many others struggling with so much more… and believe it or not, there are many people out there who are struggling with all that, and still doing good things with their lives, like encouraging an 18 year old drowning victim. Thanks Scotty!!

Until tomorrow… WE LOVE YA’LL!!!

August 15th, 2018 – It’s The Effort That Counts

From My Facebook Post:

Taylor Update: It’s the effort that counts

First thing this morning, as soon as I get into Taylor’s room, I can tell he was in a good mood! I asked how he slept, and he said “Pretty good, actually.” I was so glad to hear him have such a night sleep! Brain injury patients are known for rough night’s sleep and we have had our nights… but all in all, we have been pretty fortunate.

Another busy day was before him and he certainly seemed like he was up to it!

He is doing great on the trach ‘cap’ and no issues with the peg removal! PENNY! A few people mentioned he might get the trach out next week!! He doesn’t get too excited… just a ‘cool’ showing his agreement. LOL Meanwhile, we are all excited and looking forward to that time!

Like I mentioned yesterday, his therapists are incorporating vision exercises more and more lately and today continued that mindset. PENNY!

During OT, T was given a few solid color objects, and he had to identify their colors. He did great! He gets colors right most of the time but this time it was from a few feet away so that is a big deal! He also recognized small amounts of movements and a few shapes (he’s a nerd… so rhombus… not diamond.. the therapist had to look it up… admittedly, I did too LOL) PENNY!

Speech therapy had a bit more tongue exercises… checkout the video to see how he remembered yesterday’s results and compared them to today! PENNY!

PT is always fun for him… it is his favorite… except for yoga… he really doesn’t like it LOL That’s ok, he still does it and tries his best. He also had a great session on the treadmill! No handrails!! PENNY!

During other PT times today, he had to do leg lifts. This was in a group PT session – so he had another brain injury patient join him. Taylor is rocking and rolling through PT while others are just getting started or are having some troubles. He doesn’t see others progress, so he usually doesn’t mention anything… today was different. His partner for PT was trying to do leg lifts right beside him, and she was struggling… she was sad because she could barely get her leg up high… Taylor, in true Taylor form, simply reminded her “It’s OK, it’s the effort that counts!”

Taylor’s encouraging words to his partner during PT are just a tiny example of who he is and how he cares for others. He makes us all proud for his recovery efforts but even prouder for how he cares about others.

In other PT news… 😊 Samm was cleared to walk T on her own! The two of them have been spending some QT together before sissy heads off to college for the fall so adding walks in the mix will be fun for both of them. They will miss each other so I predict many many facetime calls 😊

“It’s the effort that counts” – Let’s all take those words to heart… sometimes we fall short… sometimes we struggle… but in the end, it’s the effort that counts. Thanks son. I needed that reminder today! I love you!

Until tomorrow… WE LOVE YA’LL!!!

August 14th, 2018 – Don’t Look Down

From My Facebook Post:

Taylor Update: Don’t Look Down

Taylor had a very restful night sleep last night! He was so wore out from PT – he fell asleep early and slept through the night. PENNY!

His day was pretty busy, for sure! Jenni and I spent a lot of the day working so Samantha ran the day! It’s so awesome how she just steps right in/up and handles things with such responsibility and care for Taylor. ❤️

Yesterday, his trach was capped so we are moving forward and hopefully getting that bugger out soon! Even if it’s a week or so, we know it’s the right direction, so we’ll take it! PENNY!

Today was exciting because we had another milestone reached… his feeding peg was taken out! For a few days it will be a little sensitive, but I know he is already excited about sleeping on his side! PENNY!

As football season gets closer, he is loving wearing his South Carolina Gamecocks gear… many folks here like other schools but he wears it proudly… they all still cheer for him, and heckle him, he loves that too! It’s all in good fun! 🙂

He spent some time in ST today doing tongue exercises to help improve his speech. I am telling you what… the therapy team here knows their stuff and they don’t leave any stone un-turned! He did great – they said his tongue might get tired as the day gets older… they must not know him that well yet LOL He’s a jabber jaw just the like the rest of us! PENNY!

PT was unique today and I hope this type of experience continues. As Taylor’s vision gets a tiny bit better, they are trying to challenge him and incorporate some vision exercises in with his PT. I LOVE THIS!!

As I mentioned, I wasn’t there to see this first hand, so when I watched the videos, it was brand new to me. I just feel so optimistic about his chances to see again! The brain damage is heaviest in his vision center, so we just must be patient, optimistic and hopeful!

We have seen slight improvements here and there, but this morning Taylor, for the first time, felt as though he could see a bit better. He could see that sissy’s shorts were pink. Color recognition has been something he has been able to do, but VERY close to his eyes. This was a bit further away and he nailed it! PENNY! He also said he could see the shape/outline of Samm’s face. PENNY!

For about a week we have noticed that he can recognize certain lighting. When the light’s on, he can usually tell… when we go into a hallway, he can ‘sense’ it’s darker. Things like that. All of this ‘comes and goes’ – gone more often than present.

Today was the first time the therapy team tried incorporating vision into his walking therapy. When I watched the videos ya’ll… I’m not going to lie. I lost it! I am so excited to see him working on his vision like he does his physical therapy! His attitude during this is upbeat too, which I love. It’s not easy for him during down time… trust me… it gets to him, but seeing how he was trying so hard and working with the therapist… man oh man. He just impressed me so much every single day! PENNY!

His vision is heavy on our hearts… but today we added a few pennies specifically for his vision… if there is anything I learned throughout Taylor’s Journey is that those pennies matter. They are not a fundraiser… they are an awareness raiser! Here is to more pennies for his vision in the days and weeks to come!

Please PLEASE keep fighting with us and sharing Taylor’s Journey with others! There is power in numbers, and we need everyone fighting with us! We love hearing all the comments from across the country and internationally!

Today was a recharge for our hope for his vision, I’m not sure if he feels the same excitement but I know even if he doesn’t… he will keep his head up and drive on! The road is long and filled with all sorts of obstacles but with your help, we can find out way!! Please keep sending prayers, love and positive thoughts his way!!!

Pennies are not always visible… but they are there!
Until tomorrow… WE LOVE YA’LL!!!

August 13th, 2018 – My Way

From My Facebook Post:

Taylor Update: My Way

Taylor woke up tired but quickly found the energy to get his day started off right! Good thing too, he had such a full schedule today haha!

After breakfast… he jumped right into PT with an hour of work on the Treadmill!! He did great! Walked 32 minutes straight!

After the treadmills, a session of OT and ST before he came back to his room for a little break. His Aunt and Uncle and Cousins had to leave today so we spent some time chatting with T and I managed to twist his arm into singing for a little before lunch 😊 PENNY!

We didn’t have much time so I suggested his “go to” (we like the Frank Sinatra songs too because it helps us compare his progress to older videos). You can tell he was a little tired from the busy morning but he managed to find his rhythm and swagger LOL! He did great, sounds so much clearer and his breathing is so much more controlled! PENNY!

For the afternoon sessions, he had some Recreational Therapy and he made his Momma a bamboo planter – it turned out pretty cool – he never did that before and he did great! PENNY!😁

Before the day ended for him, TWO more rounds of PT! He really does enjoy it and works very hard at it too! Squats from different levels and even walking while pushing a shopping cart – with some resistance given by Samm – she’s such a great sister helping all the time! PENNY!

His muscle control has improved so much! When he does the squats, you can tell how much muscle he has gained and how much determination he really has! PENNY!

Earlier in the day when we were talking with T, some of the conversation surrounded how unique his rehabilitation has been… how hard he works… and how successful he has been. I thought it was fitting to title this post ‘My Way’ – because it really does seem like he’s breaking all the barriers and expectations… and he’s doing this his way! I LOVE IT!!!

OMG!!! I almost forgot!!! Taylor got the ‘cap’ on his trach today… this is an awesome ‘next step’ for getting that baby OUT!!! PENNY PENNY PENNY!!!❤️

Please Please PLEASE! Keep sending love, thoughts and prayers for Taylor – specifically his vision!

Until tomorrow… WE LOVE YA’LL!!!

August 12th, 2018 – Tomorrow’s A New Day

From My Facebook Post:

Taylor Update: Tomorrow’s a New Day

As the weekend quickly comes to an end, I remind myself just how lucky we are to have such wonderful people in our lives. It’s nearly impossible to believe that today is Sunday. The weekend burned by, not just for us, but for Taylor too… and that is awesome!

Tomorrow will be a very busy day for Taylor – he’s excited… we are excited!!!

He had so many friends here today we had to move to the family lounge so we didn’t get in trouble 😊 That was a lot of FUN! Watching him goof around with everyone was very rewarding. He has such a positive attitude toward everything, it just leaves me in awe.

His Aunt, Uncle, and Cousins were here today too and we all enjoyed a few fun rounds of MadLibs. I can’t share the outcome of the MadLibs… they weren’t exactly G-rated… I blame Taylor LOL

Before everyone left for the day, some staying overnight while others are headed back home, we did take quite a few photos. He wanted to stand for them… and he did great! He looked very proud of himself… which made me every prouder of him!

I know he can’t see the photos, but I know for sure that he enjoyed taking them, you can see it in his smile and his eyes.

He’s getting settled in for the night and looking forward to a day of hard work tomorrow!

Our friends and Taylor’s friends have helped us so much! Things like GoFundMe, T-shirts, wristbands, silent auctions, help with hotels, personal contributions of time and money, food, Facebook support (which we all LOVE!) and so much more! I can only say that we could not do this without your love and support! It helps so much to focus on what we need to focus on… Taylor!

We started selling wristbands and we already had to order more! That is SO cool! If you get a wristband (check out the PenniesforTaylor page for information on how to order), please consider taking a photo with them on and tagging the PenniesForTaylor page and the “Pennies For Taylor” Instagram account! When he can see, and I believe in my heart that he will, I know it will awesome for him to see those photos! ❤️

As your weekend draws to a close, don’t dread tomorrow so much. It’s a Monday, but it’s a NEW DAY… and let’s all do our best to make the most of it so we can find more pennies for ourselves!! I know that’s what Taylor will do, let’s all join him in that personal challenge!

Everywhere we turn, we have people helping us and supporting us through Taylor’s Journey. Whether they are 10’s… 100’s… or 1000’s of miles away, or right down the road from our house… we feel the love from everyone… and so does Taylor!

Taylor sure has made an impact in our lives and it is a blessing to see him impact so many others!

Since day 1 we have asked for everyone’s help through thoughts and prayers… to share in this burden with us… to fight with us… and without each and everyone one of you, we would have been lost. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

We have a long road ahead… it’s been over 5 weeks… and our tank never even reached half empty. Thank you!

Until tomorrow… WE LOVE YA’LL!!!
