September 15th, 2018 – Score

From My Facebook Post:

Taylor Update: Score!

We all slept in a bit today… YES!!! It doesn’t happen often but when we can, we will take full advantage of it 😊

We had such a good time last night at the baseball game! T really enjoyed the atmosphere and the Nationals bullpen was so cool to him! They gave him a ball and kept a watchful eye on him with us throughout the game. Even though they are our competitors (GO BRAVES!), we could tell they cared, and we appreciate that! T enjoyed the ballpark food… this boy can eat!!! His first of so many things last night, carried over into today.

The Gamecock game was cancelled so we had to fill in some activities… so we got a little creative…

I could lose my breathing just TYPING this… so you can imagine how nervous the thought of this made us feel… but BUT Taylor was totally up for it… so…. we went into the POOL for the first time today! He was very comfortable and enjoyed goofing around a little while exercising a little. PENNY PENNY PENNY!!!!

We spent some time in the gym doing some exercises… ya know, curls and stuff LOL He’s such a dork – check out the video to see what I mean 😊

Then… since we had about 30 minutes before the gym/rec center closed up for the weekend… we decided to take a spin at shooting the basketball. He did great at responding to the ball bouncing back to him – sound and some vision (catching motion/movement) helped him catch the ball most times… sometimes it was just a bad throw (me) and sometimes it was just a bad hop LOL

He tried shooting the basketball over and over… determined to make a basket… adjusting and adjusting… never seemed to get frustrated or impatient, just trusted the feedback and tried again. After trying so many times… he made his first basket!!! PENNY!!

We are closing the night up with some board games! Here’s hoping I win this time 😊

Jennifer and I hope your weekend is going well and that the storm hasn’t treated you too badly… we are thinking of everyone who is impacted by the wind, rain and rising waters… please be safe!!!

Until tomorrow… Miracles Happen!  WE LOVE YA’LL!!!

September 14th, 2018 – Baseball

From My Facebook Post:

Taylor Update: Baseball

Taylor rocked his day today at therapy! He was so upbeat and quick to tell everyone about our weekend plans!

We had music therapy again today. He REALLY enjoys this – so do we – same song today as he is working on it and it’s a great song for breathing and articulation – with mic in hand today, T got into a bit more and responds well to the therapists coaching. The best 45 minutes of the day!!

We were kind of bummed that there was not PT on the agenda today but there were so many other therapies that he took part in… things like learning how to study and prepare for getting back to school! PENNY!!! He will have this a few times and hopefully he will rejoin the classroom in the spring 😊

The vision exercises were a little different today, but they did prove that he was doing better than last week! PENNY!!!!

When we got back from therapy, a bit of a surprise… SAMM is here!!! OK, it was a BIG surprise and he hugged her for a long time! 😊 He misses Josh and Samm so much but is very proud of what they are doing! Samm is here as a precaution for the storm so we get to spend time with her for the weekend! PENNY!

Jennifer and I are thinking a lot of the storm situation and those affected by it, please PLEASE stay safe!! ❤️

We have some busy plans this weekend – tonight, we are going to a baseball game, a great birthday gift from a longtime friend of ours! Thank you!!! He is so excited! It’s his first baseball game since his accident… PENNY!!!

We hope you enjoy your weekend… even with the storm… there are pennies to be found and celebrate!!!

Until tomorrow… Miracles Happen!  WE LOVE YA’LL!!!

September 12th, 2018 – Ten Weeks

From My Facebook Post:

Taylor Update: 10 Weeks

We had such a good day today! Watching T with his therapists is so humbling. He gets along with them so well and they return the kindness. He truly makes the most out of his opportunities, and Jennifer and I are just so proud of him!

Therapy was pretty fun again today! PENNY!! He loved playing family feud during Rec Therapy! What a great idea! We are going to try to get a version for us all to play at home!

OT included more vision exercises… this was a full session. He is challenged with these but we can also note improvements every time!! PENNY!! Taylor’s personality really shines through with his therapists… We are just so lucky to have such great people helping him get better and meet his goals! ❤️

During PT, he spent some time on the treadmill, building endurance and stamina. In the video, take note of the section focusing on his legs/feet. I AM SO IMPRESSED BY THIS!! He has come SO far and he has worked hard for everything he has… but it takes a team.. and his team is awesome!! INCLUDING YA’LL!!!! PENNY!

He also did some balance activities… these aren’t the easiest for him, especially because of his vision, but he pushes and tries hard each time… definitely noticing strong improvements here too! PENNY!

It’s been 10 weeks today since Taylor’s drowning accident. When I think back, or read my Facebook posts from back then, I easily fall back into the darkness that we all had experienced and will continue to be affected by for a very long time.

But then, I look at Taylor today: my heart smiles, my hair stands up, my eyes water, appreciation fills my lungs… and love washes over me.

Connecting the two points in time seems impossible… but it WAS possible. Tiny things every day, moving in the right direction, adding up, slowly but surely… leaving that dark time of our past… right where it belongs. Behind us. Pennies… every.single.one. they all made such a huge impact on Taylor’s future… and his life!

Today’s pennies are just as important as they were when the first penny hit the empty jar… Oh that first penny. I’ll never EVER forget it. The talk with the ‘crew’… the thought behind it, the value it had for anyone who ever met Taylor… and whoever would meet him in the future…it sounded so alone… so insignificant… BUT that was all it took!

Never overlook the tiny things in life!!! Something good is STILL good even when there is bad all around it.

Please keep fighting with us! The road is long, our tank is full… and we continue to need each and every one of you! Please continue to send love, thoughts and prayers for Taylor – they mean so much more than we can ever describe!

Until tomorrow… Miracles Happen!  WE LOVE YA’LL!!!

September 6th, 2018 – Setting Goals

From My Facebook Post:

Taylor Update: Setting Goals

I fixed the AC in the apartment yesterday, so it wasn’t as warm last night! YES!! We all had a much better night sleep… including Shyla 😊

Taylor had a pretty busy day! When we first started outpatient, each therapy team asked for goals for Taylor… and they quickly put those into a plan.

ST worked on his vocabulary/speech strength by challenging him with tongue twisters. Sally sells shea sells… ahhhh, never mind, you get the point! 😊

OT included even more vision testing/therapy. We absolutely LOVE this! It’s setting a baseline and will help us measure his success throughout the rest of his journey!

Also, in PT… well, they didn’t hold back on adding challenges to meet his goals: Increase awareness in space and balance… BOOM! He loved it!

Several new pennies today, including his first-time shopping! PENNY! He had an ‘OK’ time at the grocery store… but hey, who has fun grocery shopping LOL We had to round up some good food to watch the first NFL game tonight! PENNY!

When the team asked T for his goals, he already had them in mind… yes, we talked about them, as a family, over the weekend, but that was just ideas…and by no means was it our decision. When it came time to discuss goals, he was ready… not in ‘spit fire’ fashion, but more pensive, making sure that he was ‘sure’ that those were his goals. Jennifer and I have a feeling this will only be round 1 of goals… he’s too determined.

As for tonight… he’s excited about NFL and his fantasy football teams… I am too. He worked hard today, and the game will go late into the evening… so, he planned accordingly… and took a nap! 😊

I have had many people message me about wristbands to support Taylor! Yes, we still have PLENTY! We actually received a new shipment so if you’d like some, please visit the PenniesforTaylor page to learn more or click here for the post: https://www.facebook.com/PenniesForTaylor/posts/2057194437924100 Thank you SO much for supporting T!!

Please PLEASE above all, continue to support him with your love, thoughts and prayers! ❤️

When I set goals, they kind of just sit there… and I remind myself from time to time… oh yeah! I wanted to do that… or it’s ‘on my list’. Maybe I shouldn’t let things linger and start recognizing that goals aren’t meant to be on a list… they are meant to be crossed OFF the list.

Until tomorrow… Miracles Happen!  WE LOVE YA’LL!!!

September 5th, 2018 – 9 Weeks

From My Facebook Post:

Taylor Update: 9 Weeks

Taylor slept well last night… but honestly, we stayed up later than usual, so we were all sluggish this morning. Lesson learned, and I guess binge watching The Office will have to get cut off early tonight 😊 I blame Jennifer HAHA!

He told me yesterday that the PT team was too nice… I agreed but let’s not test them just yet LOL Good thing too because it was time to get to work today! T wanted to wear his Wofford College shirt today to represent his sissy’s school… after all, he was wearing the new shoes she got him – thanks sissy!❤️

Each day that passes is another day of victory! We never forget that! The reality is that the results we fight for need to be balanced with patience. It’s been 9 weeks since ‘that’ day. Each day is a gift, but we feel like we need to take the bull by the horns and press on fighting for everything we can! Patience, yes… but sitting around waiting isn’t the answer either, and I’m so grateful that Taylor gets THAT part of his journey. He gets that there needs to be a balance! We try to walk that line, but as it is… everything we measure, it’s ONLY been 9 weeks! 9 Weeks and we are dropping pennies in the jar every day! It’s been a long time but the road ahead is much longer!!

We are just so fortunate to even worry about the balance of results and patience… not everyone is afforded that challenge, and we embrace our blessing and take it very seriously!

What about today? Get back on track Shawn!! 🙂

He worked on some vision exercises – these were interesting. It looks cool, and I am SO glad we are doing these kinds of things, but CVI is so complex; you never know what is good or bad for the brain. We are hoping that, in time, we will be able to meet a CVI specialist who can evaluate his vision possibilities, combine that with his MRI images, and come up with a specific plan. I am working on this aggressively but it’s such a difficult thing to figure out… and the specialists are few and far between too. Nonetheless, what he was doing today was very cool and he did great! KEEP IT UP TAYLOR!! PENNY!!

Taylor’s fine motor skills are getting better every day! Today he practiced buttoning and unbuttoning shirts… this is hard (was even harder weeks ago) but it is one of his goals (increased fine motor skills) so he faced it head on and worked hard at something we all take for granted. PENNY!

During PT today, we reached another HUGE milestone!! Are you ready for this?!??!!?

Treadmills WITHOUT the harness… no safety net… no assistance with weight bearing… just him, and the machine (well, and his therapist haha)! PENNY!! His average for 12 minutes was 2.2 MPH – We are SO proud of you TAYLOR!!!

It was a great day of therapy for T. His legs are tired but he is looking forward to tomorrow… especially since NFL seasons starts! He’s in 3 Fantasy Football Leagues… I worry he will beat me again this year… fingers crossed!

I hope you had a great day too and found your balance between results and patience!! If it feels frustrating, try not to let it get the best of you! – it’s not easy… trust me, it’s something I have to work on ALL the time – it doesn’t come as easily to me as it does Taylor… but I will keep working on it, that’s for sure!

Until tomorrow… Miracles Happen!  WE LOVE YA’LL!!!

September 4th, 2018 – New Shoes

From My Facebook Post:

Taylor Update: New Shoes

It was a little hard for the 3 of us to get up and moving this morning… maybe that was just us or maybe that is everyone after a long weekend 😊

Today was T’s first day of outpatient therapy. We were prepared for a fast-paced day filled with a lot of hard work… instead, it was very slow LOL – A lot of administrative things and evaluations. That’s ok though, it was a nice intro to the new team and we are ready to get things rocking and rolling!

Taylor had one last birthday visitor last night – one of his best friends drove all the way from upstate SC, just to see him for an hour or so… then drove back. Yikes, that’s a lot of driving but T really appreciated it David! Jennifer and I did as well 🙂

A few nice surprises arrived in the mail today, including an awesome pair of USC Socks from a long time friend of Momma’s, and a new pair of workout shoes from Sissy! Taylor wanted to model the shoes… This kid makes me crazy sometimes LOL

We stayed up VERY late last night, even after David left… just to read the FB comments for his birthday! Thank you everyone! I guess it was a good thing that things were a little slower today then we thought… lesson learned, so off to bed early tonight 😊

T wanted to include a thank you message in the video today! He was almost too tired to do it but that just made him a little more goofy ❤️

Tomorrow WILL BE AWESOME!!! I CAN’T WAIT!!!

I hope your week hasn’t started off too rough after the long weekend! Keep fighting!!

Until tomorrow… Miracles Happen!  WE LOVE YA’LL!!!

September 3rd, 2018 – Happy Birthday Son!

From My Facebook Post:

Taylor Update: Happy Birthday Son!

Well, today was the big day 😊 Taylor turned 19! It was a pretty quiet day as we had a lot of moving around, reorganizing, and resting to do 😊 We did have one more visit today and it was great to see one of his best buds and his dad!

We are settled in our apartment and are about ready to have one more round of cake and ice cream – why? WHY NOT!?!?! LOL

Tomorrow we start outpatient therapy with T. He is excited and nervous at the same time, but we know it will be great and he will continue to grow in his rehabilitation. We are excited to meet his new team of therapists and some new friends as well!

What a weekend! The timing between inpatient and outpatient just could not have been better for us! Some time out and about in the real world, watching football, celebrating his birthday with friends and family, and even sneaking is some good rest time.

Jennifer and I spent a lot of time reflecting on the past two months. We are just so appreciative of what we have been given back! Our hearts are so joyful, appreciative, humble… thankful. For so SO many things!! We also spent a lot of time reflecting on other’s stories… not just Taylor’s. Not everyone’s journey is filled with so many wonderful days… and we know that… it makes our hearts hurt.. at times it makes us feel guilty. We live our days keeping those struggling in mind, and each person we have heard about is in our hearts and minds all the time! Keep fighting hard for through your own journey and never give up, or give in! It’s not ours to decide the outcome, we just have to fight! We are fighting right along with you, even if we never met!

This week is full of firsts!!! Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday:
Monday (Today) is Samantha’s first day of class!! NAIL IT SAMM!! WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU!!.
Tuesday is T’s first day of outpatient therapy!! DO IT TAYLOR!!! WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU!!
Wednesday is Joshua’s first day at his new job! KICK BUTT JOSH!!! WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU!!!

Even though it’s T’s birthday, we are celebrating all these first for our kids this week!! THEY ARE ALL AWESOME AND WE LOVE THEM SO MUCH! Join us in celebrating these achievements and cheering them on!!

Tonight’s update is a collection of some of the videos sent to T to wish him a happy birthday! Rest assured, we have showed him every single one! Thank you all SO MUCH!!! Messages from South Carolina Gamecocks, Wofford Terriers and so many others!!

Until tomorrow… Miracles Happen!  WE LOVE YA’LL!!!

September 2nd, 2018 – Birthday Weekend, Part 2

From My Facebook Post:

Taylor Update: Birthday Weekend, Part 2

After such a great day yesterday, it was no surprise that Taylor woke up this morning in a great mood! Well rested and ready for round 2!

T had so many visitors today it was hard to keep up! Thank you everyone who was able to spend time with him this weekend!

When outpatient is over, Jennifer & I would love to have a ‘welcome home’ party so he can see everyone!! We will certainly be in touch as we get closer to that time!

He spent the day resting but interacting with his visitors, and he loved every single minute of it!!!❤️

Day two is winding down and we are finishing reading cards that were sent to him, he absolutely loves that!! Birthday cards, get well cards, and random funny cards… he loves them!!

We did a few group photos, and even though we did a few, we still missed a few!! I will take the blame for that… I was slacking, we were just so excited to see everyone, I forgot… Next time for sure!!!

T’s actual birthday is tomorrow… tomorrow will be a MUCH quieter day as we prepare for the start of a new chapter in his journey! We will be resting and getting ready for the tough regimen ahead… we are all excited!

Samantha is collecting video birthday messages for T’s birthday! If you would like, please record a birthday message and email it to penniesfortaylor@outlook.com. We will try to pull them all together for tomorrow night so email them over asap! 😊

We all hope you are having an excellent holiday weekend!! Please be safe and keep fighting for your own pennies!! Work Hard, Pray Hard!

Until tomorrow… Miracles Happen!  WE LOVE YA’LL!!!

September 1st, 2018 – Birthday Weekend, Part 1

From My Facebook Post:

Taylor Update: Birthday Weekend, Part 1

We slept in a bit today… in good ol’ Dorward fashion 😊

That was a nice change, but it also meant a lot of hurrying because it wouldn’t be long before Gamecock Kickoff!

We watched the football game and celebrated T’s birthday with many of our friends and family! It was a lot of fun for T to see everyone and he loved the birthday hugs!

He was surprised by all the gifts he received… even said “Aren’t I too old for gifts?” LOL Perhaps… but not today!

As the night wound down, we were chatting about how much he enjoyed the day… we asked what his favorite gift was… his answer – seeing everyone. ❤️

The weekend is not nearly over, and we will continue to celebrate his birthday tomorrow!

As we take a ‘break’, I hope you’re enjoying your weekend as well!!!

2 more days of fun and celebration until the hard routine of therapy starts back up!!! We are all excited for the next part of Taylor’s Journey, but for now, Jennifer and I are loving seeing T so happy with the people he loves!

Until tomorrow… Miracles Happen!  WE LOVE YA’LL!!!
